Storytelling with Daffodils: 250 Years of History”The program for the Virginia Daffodil Society fall meeting will celebrate America’s semi-quincentennial anniversary. Join us on October 3 for a presentation sharing how VDS created a large-scale daffodil planting plan for Libby Hill Park which reflects the history of the site and the surrounding Church Hill neighborhood.Libby Hill Park is situated on high bluffs above the James River, and the vista here is known as “the view that named Richmond”. A short walk away is St. John’s Church where Patrick Henry delivered his “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech in 1775. The park was also the first public park designated in Richmond, and also the first officially recognized city historic district. In collaboration with the Church Hill Association, and with a Community Foundation grant, approximately 1,400 daffodils were planted Fall 2024. The selection of daffodils planted includes species, historic, classic, and modern varieties. Each daffodil chosen for the planting has a connection, either by introduction date or cultivar name, to the past 250+ years of history. If you would like to attend, but you are not a Virginia Daffodil Society member, please RSVP by email to: [email protected]
